Abstract
W. O. Mize, J. T. Day, and Green Berry Swango founded Hazel Green Academy in 1880. Eventually, administration and financial support were shifted to agencies of the Disciples of Christ (Christian) Church, first under the Christian Women's Board of Missions in 1886, and then under the United Christian Missionary Society in 1919. Pine Mountain Settlement School was founded in 1913, by Katherine Pettit and Ethel de Long. The two women received ninety-five acres of land from William Creech for the purpose of providing educational opportunities for the people of the Pine Mountain area of Harlan County, Kentucky.
